Liam Carmichael

Four years ago today, my best friend, Liam Carmichael was killed in Iraq,

Not a day goes by that I do not think of him and I miss him still, as though the loss was just yesterday.

He was a mountain of a man with a mountain of a heart. There was not a thing he wouldn’t do for his friends and he proved this to be true on many occasions.

He was the most lovable of rogues and always quick to see the funny side of everything. Even the things he shouldn’t. But that was what made Liam the man he was and why he was loved by so many.

I served with him in my army days and I worked alongside of him in Iraq on the PSD Circuit. Everyday to him was an adventure. Maybe not always to the taste of approval of the people around him. But it is safe to say, there was NEVER a dull moment when Liam Carmichael was around.

I miss you buddy.

If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always.
Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.
And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.
